Obituary
In Loving Remembrance of Bernice Priscilla Steinback
Bernice Priscilla (Jones) Steinback born in Harwood, Maryland was the eldest and last living child of Priscilla Sharps Brown. She was preceded in death by her siblings Hazel Hippolyte, Martha Coffer, and Raymond "Mickey" Brown.
Before leaving Maryland, Bernice met Elroy Johnson and from this union gave birth to Donald Johnson. Bernice moved to California, where she met and married Elton Steinback, and from their marriage, Michael, Marcus, and Trudie Steinback were born.
Bernice was a 70+ year resident of San Francisco, California. As a Jones Memorial United Methodist Church member, Bernice served with the Helen Hodgeson Art and Culture Mission Group. You could find Bernice in the church kitchen preparing and serving fried chicken meals most Sundays, visiting friends and family across the country, and listening to (and fussing) over her shows and Giants games at her home of 50 years – 300 Topeka Avenue.
When Bernice came to California, she was employed as a domestic worker in San Rafael and was extremely fond of the families she worked for, and they were fond of her. She worked part-time during the holidays for the U.S. Postal Service and worked with the U. S. Treasury Department then the U.S. Mint in San Francisco until retiring in 1996, 25 years of service!
The family was always Bernice's priority. She was known for speaking her mind to relatives, friends and foes equally. She was going to let you know how she felt and rarely held back. To the age of 93, Bernice remained strong and feisty! Our heavenly father called her home after a brief illness. During that time, she was lovingly cared for by AngelNoelle, her granddaughter and personal angel, who rarely left her side.
Bernice leaves to cherish her memory, children: Donald Johnson (Sharon), Michael Steinback (Sharon), Marcus Steinback, Trudie Chrisentary (John), Shirley Steinback-Hawthrone. Grandchildren: Charise Sesker (Raymond); Aprill Suggs (Phillip), Shammara Pope (Michael), Cameron Steinback, Samuel Chrisentary, and AngelNoelle Chrisentary. Great-grandchildren Kayla Burnett, Karrington Sesker, Aniyah Talley, Selah and Savannah Pope. Great-great-grandchild Kaiden Valentine. And a host of relatives, cousins, nieces, and nephews: Ella Meade, Dennis "Bud" Sharps, John Hippolyte, Norah Hippolyte, Dominique Johnson, Jon-Paul Hippolyte, Ayann Taylor, Favian Coffer, Dean Coffer Jr., William Coffer, Veric Brown, Valerie Hill, and Lemuel Brown, Ricardo and Everett Lacy, Granville Tongue, Linda and Chris Weldon. Special friends, and close relations, you know who you are and how much she loved every one of you
To the Steinback Family, we at Greener Pastures Funeral Home, extend to you our deepest sympathy & condolences. Our prayers remain that your abiding faith in God will continue to comfort, to strengthen and sustain you during your time of bereavement.
