Deacon Lymus Holman known to many in the community as SGM Holman and to his loving wife Olivia as "Rock" departed this life on January 5th in Powder Springs, Ga. at the age of 77.  His battle with serious medical issues in recent years showed his courage in facing life challenges with a smile.  Despite the pain Deacon Holman came out a hero and stayed strong until the end.

Deacon Holman was born to Adam and Eva Holman on August 14, 1943 in Holly Hill, SC.  He proclaimed his love for Christ at an early age and joined Galilee Christian Church there in Holly Hill. After attending the Holly Hills schools, he later moved to Boston, Ma.  Following that move, he was drafted into the U.S. Army where he proudly served for 27 years.

Deacon Holman met the love of his life Olivia while stationed at Ft. Campbell, Ky.  According to him, it was love at first sight and he actually proposed on their second date.  The couple were married on April 7, 1971 and were able to celebrate 49 years of marriage. This year would have been their 50th anniversary. To this union 2 children were born:  daughter Deirdre and son Derek.

During his military service, Deacon Holman achieved many awards and medals and obtained the rank of SGM.  He had 2 tours of duty in Vietnam, and was stationed in Germany twice, and was also stationed at Ft. Carson, Colorado, Ft Benning, Ga. and Bellevue, Nebraska.  Upon retirement the family moved to Powder Springs, Ga where he along with Colonel Bernie Booth initiated the JROTC program in Paulding County in 1993.  The program first originated at Paulding County High School and later moved to Hiram High where he taught for 14 years.  While there the program received many accolades. SGM Holman was a winner of the 11 Alive "Class Act, received a letter and flag from Congressman Bob Barr and a letter of resolution from the House of Representatives having being selected as the state of Georgia's Non Commissioned Officer JROTC Instructor of the year for 2001-2002. Retiring in2007, the Holmans set out to enjoy life and proceeded to travel until his illness progressed.

Upon joining New Hope in 2013, Deacon Holman took his duties as a deacon to heart.  He won over many with his infectious smile and willingness to work. His pleasantness was contagious to everyone he met.  He is preceded in death by his mother Eva Holman, father Adam Holman, sisters Eva Moughalian, Margaret Williams and brothers George and William Holman. Lymus is survived by his loving wife Olivia of Powder Springs, Ga., daughter Deirdre Guthrie (Marc) of Powder Springs, Ga., son Derek Holman of Powder Springs, Ga., grandson Aarrion Holman of Powder Springs, Ga., 3 sisters Vernell Lawrence (Winston) of Cambria Heights, NY., Susie Cobb (Joseph) of Columbia, SC., Lula Samuel (Harold) of Columbia, SC., 1 brother, Odell Holman (Minnie) of Eutawville, SC., 2 brothers-in-law Oliver Wilkes (Adell) of Madisonville, Ky., Charles Wilkes (Carmelita) of LaVergne, TN., sister-in-law Martha Jones of Madisonville, Ky., special niece Je'ton Wilkes who we considered our second daughter and a host of nieces, nephews, cousins and special friends.

The family will welcome guests for the visitation on Wednesday, January 13, 2021 from 6:00 PM - 7:00 PM at Greener Pastures Funeral Home, 4405 Marietta St. Powder Springs, GA 30127

The funeral  services will take place the following day on Thursday, January 14, 2021 for 11:00 AM in the Chapel of Greener Pastures Funeral Home, 4405 Marietta St. Powder Springs, GA 30127.

The Interment will be held on Friday, January 15, 2021 for 10:00 AM at the Georgia National Cemetery, 1080 Scott Hudgens Dr., Canton, GA 30114.
