Rhoda Adina Clarke, age 82, passed away peacefully on July 8, 2020, after a brief illness. She was born in Portland, Jamaica and was the eighth child of Rueben and Rebecca Clarke.
Rhoda emigrated to the United States in 1968 and lived most of her life in Providence, Rhode Island. She worked as a beloved healthcare provider at the Jewish Home for the Aged and Charlesgate Nursing Home. She was a graduate of Rhode Island Community College and was a longtime member of Olney Street Baptist Church in Providence, Rhode Island. She relocated to Douglasville Georgia in 2007 to live with her daughter and son-in law and help to raise her two beloved grandchildren.
She was an incredible mother who encouraged her children to pursue their dreams but always remember to give back to others. “Aunt Rhoda”, as she was fondly called, was a source of strength and support to her extended family. She had a large heart and sharp mind and was a constant listening ear and giver of advice to the younger generation. She was the keeper of the Clarke family traditions and shared many memories of her parents and childhood to ensure we never forget where we came from.
Rhoda enjoyed cooking her traditional Jamaican food and made sure her children and grandchildren learned to cook her recipes. She also loved to crochet and watch her soap operas. She was an avid reader and puzzle solver but her favorite hobby was keeping in touch with her family by engaging with her many callers on the phone.
Left to honor Rhoda and remember her love are her two daughters, Karen Johns and Ronette Clarke Williams, her son in law Joseph Williams and her grandchildren Brandon WIlliams and Zephrah Williams (all residing in Douglasville, GA). She is preceded in death by her nine siblings, Henry Clarke, Ruby (Clarke) Dowman, Jethro Clarke, Reuben Clarke, Mildred (Clarke) Porter, Beryl (Clarke) Panton, Sam Clarke, Olive (Clarke) Perry and Myrtle (Clarke) Usher. She is also survived by 30 nieces and nephews, dozens of grand and great nieces and nephews, numerous cousins, friends and extended family in Jamaica, England, Canada and across the United States.
